A COMEDY ABOUT FAMILY, TRUTH & NOLLYWOOD.

Based on a true story, Frank Forbes and the Yahoo Boy is a new play by Adelaide writer and filmmaker Matt Hawkins.

Set in Adelaide and Nigeria and based on real events, Frank Forbes and the Yahoo Boy is the story of retired engineer Frank who, after his kids flee the nest, has nothing else to look forward to but the opportunity to sort out the tools in his shed. In a desperate attempt to get him to connect with society his daughter, Tracy, buys him a computer and an internet connection. Via random emails he encounters would-be Nollywood filmmaker, Ishaku, whose indefatigable optimism draws him into a world of comforting delusions. After the spur of the moment decision to invest in Ishaku’s next movie, Frank takes the desperate measure of flying to Lagos to get his money back.

Frank Forbes and the Yahoo Boy is presented by South Australian Playwrights Theatre, a new company dedicated to production of home grown theatrical work. Our aim is to inspire local writers and performing artists to create their own stories to enrich the performance culture of this state.

WRITER/DIRECTOR MATT HAWKINS BRINGS MATURE INSIGHT AND A PERCEPTIVE EYE TO HIS MULTI-DIMENSIONAL STORY. HE ALSO REGULARLY MANAGES TO MAKE US LAUGH – SOMETIMES UPROARIOUSLY!

CAN A PIECE OF THEATRE CROSS CULTURES AND MANAGE TO ENTERTAIN AUDIENCES ALL ALONG THE DEMOGRAPHICAL SPECTRUM? CAN IT DO SO BY COMBINING ELEMENTS OF SERIOUS DRAMA AND CHARACTER DETAIL WITH ALMOST-FARCICAL COMEDY? THIS ONE CERTAINLY CAN.
